River Art Competition 2019 – “Our River, Our Life”

Objective:

We are looking to identify and recognise young Sarawak students who can demonstrate artistic excellence in Visual Arts.

Who is eligible to participate?

– This is a public competition – all Malaysian citizens and Kuching, Sarawakian residents are welcome to apply.

Prizes to be won EVERY category:

  • Champion: Cash prize RM500 + UCSI Bursary RM10,000 + certificate for student and special token for art’s teacher.
  • 1st Runner-up: Cash prize RM300 + UCSI Bursary RM8,000 + certificate for student and special token for art’s teacher.
  • 2nd Runner-up: Cash prize RM200 + UCSI Bursary RM5,000 + certificate for student and special token for art’s teacher.
  • 5 x Consolation Prizes: Cash prize RM100 x 5 + UCSI Bursary RM3,000 x 5 + certificate for students and special token for the art’s teacher.
  • Finalists: Opportunity to showcase their artwork in an exhibit + certificate

Category 1 – Painting

Should you like to showcase your creativity and talent in painting so that people can appreciate it, we would like to invite you to participate in this River Art Painting competition, “Our River, Our Life”, at Kuching.

Guidelines:
1. Drawing paper of A2 size (42cm x 59.4cm) painting works in any kind of art media.
2. You can send in as many artworks as you like but each person is only eligible for ONE prize only.
3. All artworks must be submitted together with an artist’s statement (not more than 300 words in either English or Bahasa Melayu) that describes their work.
4. Each entry must be an authentic work of the participating artist.
5. Each entry must be accompanied by a separate and completely filled entry form.
6. Artists are encouraged to submit original art work completed within this year or the previous year.
7. All art or raw materials must be prepared by the participating artist.
8. All artworks must be approved by the school’s art teacher or principal.
9. All art submissions are the property of the organisers and are non-returnable.
10. Except where prohibited by law, an entry submission to this competition constitutes the permission to use the winner’s name, likeness, prize information, and information provided on the entry form for publicity purposes, without further permission or compensation. However, a 10% royalty will be extended to the artist should any artwork be sold.

Category 2 – Sculpture

Should you like to showcase your creativity and talent in sculpture so that people can appreciate it, you can express “Our River, Our Life” in many different ways: love-hate, bitter-sweet, beauty-beast, mystery-adventure, scary-funny, cheeky-nasty and so much more with recycle materials.

Guidelines:
1. Size (below a 3ft height) sculpture works made from RECYCLABLE materials. Any further size must seek approval from the organizers.
2. You can send only ONE artwork.
3. All artworks must be submitted together with an artist’s statement (not more than 300 words in either English or Bahasa Melayu) that describes their work.
4. Each entry must be an authentic work of the participating artist.
5. Each entry must be accompanied by a separate and completely filled entry form.
6. Artists are encouraged to submit original art work completed within this year or the previous year.
7. All art or raw materials must be prepared by the participating artist.

Guidelines:
1. Poem must be written in English or Bahasa Melayu and submitted in hardcopy of A3 paper size.
2. You can send only ONE poem.
3. Each entry must be an authentic work of the participating artist.
4. Each entry must be accompanied by a separate and completely filled entry form.
5. Artists are encouraged to submit original poem completed within this year or the previous year.
6. Poem must be prepared by the participating artist.
7. Poem must be approved by the school’s English teacher or principal.
8. All poems are the property of the organisers and are non-returnable.
9. Except where prohibited by law, an entry submission to this competition constitutes the permission to use the winner’s name, likeness, prize information, and information provided on the entry form for publicity purposes, without further permission or compensation.
10. Selected participants will present their poem for 5-10 minutes at the River Art Competition which is to be held on 22 July 2019.
11. 10% royalty will be extended to the artist should any poem be sold.

Registration AND Submission of Artworks : 12th July 2019

  • Artworks received after the closing date will not be accepted. Proof of mail (with postmark) is required. The organisers will not be held liable for any damage or loss to the artwork.

Awards Ceremony

  • 22 July 2019 @ Venue TBC (selected finalists will be contacted by mail, email and phone)
  • All winners will be announced on the same day.
  • All necessary travel expenses to attend the exhibition will be borne by the participating artist.

Assessment:

A panel of judges will review all eligible entries received and select, at their sole discretion, the entries that are eligible to receive prizes.

The judging panel will evaluate the art submissions based on various criteria such as the originality of expression, creative use of materials and presentation, to name a few. The judges reserve the right to disqualify any entry if there is any reasonable doubt about the authenticity of the artwork.
