RCE KUCHING ENFORCES 5Rs CAMPAIGN IN PADAWAN SCHOOLS

17 October 2019 – The Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) Kuching has successfully conducted its 5Rs (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repurpose) campaign in year 2019 with three Padawan schools – SK St Bernard, SK St Paul and SMK Siburan. The October session ended the campaign for the year and sessions will resume next January.

RCE Kuching strongly believes that proper implementation of the 5R concept starts with education. Through this, the centre urges students who live along the Sarawak Kiri River to be proactively involved in river conservation efforts. This year alone, a total of 172 students have participated in the project and the centre expects to see the numbers growing as more schools have expressed interest to join the campaign next year.

Since its first 5R session in August 2019, the students have been encouraged to collect recyclable materials such as newspapers, cans, bottles and many others, which is a good start towards inculcating proper habits of garbage disposal. The students who collected the largest volume of recyclable materials were awarded with ‘RCE Badges’ to encourage them to maintain their 5R efforts. The schools supported by preparing designated areas specifically for the recyclable materials. Furthermore, the students who joined this campaign were also involved in various hands-on activities, games, talks from numerous agencies and competitions relating to the 5R concept.

The 5R campaign is a 2-year project which aims to teach youth and students to implement the 5R concept in their schools, homes and villages, in order to minimize the impact of pollution and dumping of waste into the rivers. The 5R sessions with the students are conducted once a month and the campaign comprises of three phases which include:

  • Knowing phase (August 2019 – February 2020)
  • Doing phase (March 2020 – August 2020)
  • Being phase (September 2020 – August 2021)

The 5R campaign has been conducted in collaboration with various RCE Kuching stakeholders including such as UCSI University, the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), WormingUp, JCI Kuching, G.A.M.E.S. PLT, Kuching Water Board, WWF-Malaysia, Kura-Kura Homestay, Sarawak River Board (SRB), UNIMAS, schools and communities along Padawan area.
