25th August 2025, UCSI Hotel Kuching - Distinguished Lecture Highlights Role of Science Diplomacy in Protecting Sarawak’s Rainforests

UCSI University Kuching Campus in collaboration with the International Institute of Science Diplomacy and Sustainability (IISDS), International Network for Governmental Service Advice (INGSA) Asia and Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) Kuching successfully hosted a distinguished lecture featuring Professor Paul Arthur Berkman, Distinguished Visiting Professor and Director of the Science Diplomacy Center at IISDS. The lecture, titled “Science Diplomacy for Rainforest Sustainability: A Unique Case for Sarawak,” brought together academics, industry experts, government and private sectors, NGOs and students to explore innovative pathways toward rainforest sustainability.
Professor Berkman emphasized science diplomacy as an inclusive, international, and transdisciplinary process that balances national and common interests for the benefit of present and future generations. He described science as the “study of change,” integrating the natural sciences, social sciences, and indigenous knowledge to reveal patterns and trends that guide informed decision-making.
A key highlight was the discussion on Sarawak’s rainforest sustainability, where Professor Berkman stressed the importance of balancing economic prosperity, environmental protection, and societal well-being. He presented that sustainable development requires both sound governance mechanisms and infrastructure to address immediate urgencies while ensuring resilience across generations.
The lecture also showcased global initiatives such as the Global Indigenous Youth Summit on Climate Change (GIYSCC), which has engaged nearly 3,000 participants from 141 nations, representing over 280 languages. This initiative reflects how Indigenous youth are shaping international climate dialogues and reinforcing the role of inclusivity in science diplomacy.
UCSI University, IISDS, INGSA-Asia and RCE Kuching expressed gratitude to Professor Berkman for sharing his expertise and inspiring the audience to reflect on their roles in science diplomacy and make positive impact in Sarawak and contribute to the global sustainability agenda.
